| | Capitol Update | | Friday, April 6, 2018 | The latest news from the State Capitol | Focus on Rural Broadband Access Continues
I joined the Center for Rural Pennsylvania at a meeting in Wellsboro Thursday to discuss broadband availability, accessibility and affordability in rural Pennsylvania.
It is encouraging to see the high level of attention being focused on the importance of broadband in communities like ours, as the limitations of not being fully connected are impacting our economy, health care and education opportunities. Broadband is not a luxury; it is a necessity as important to our communities as any water, sewer or other form of infrastructure.
During the meeting, we heard from telecommunications companies, rural development organizations, health care providers, educators, farmers, representatives from the Public Utility Commission and more on issues pertaining to the internet, cellular service and broadband. The panel of testifiers pictured above left included Anthony Ventello, executive director, Progress Authority; Eric Bridges, executive director, and Edward Matts, technology director, North Central PA Regional Planning and Development Commission; and Craig Eccher, president and CEO, Tri-County Rural Electric.
The information will be helpful to us as we work to support the resources and coordination necessary to get our rural communities better connected.

In recognition of National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week (April 9-13), PennDOT is reminding drivers to proceed with caution in construction areas for the sake of worker safety and your own safety.
Sadly, 88 PennDOT employees have lost their lives in the line of duty, including Robert Gensimore, a highway foreman in Blair County, who was struck and killed in February while setting up flares for a crash. Back in 2010, another worker, Jack Griffin of Bradford, was killed when a vehicle crashed into a work zone on Route 646.
To help prevent these tragedies and keep our work zones safe for workers, drivers and passengers, PennDOT suggests these safety tips:
- Drive the posted work zone speed limit.
- Stay alert and pay close attention to signs and flaggers.
- Turn on your headlights if signs instruct you to do so.
- Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and do not tailgate.
- Use four-way flashers when stopped or traveling slowly.
- Avoid distractions and give your full attention to the road.
- Always buckle up.
- Expect the unexpected.
- Be patient.
